Amendments to New York City’s Earned Safe and Sick Time Act: What You Need to Know
With our new remote work environment, employers need to be knowledgeable of a wider variety of laws. One such law to be aware of is the New York City Earned Safe and Sick Time Act (NYC ESSTA) and the amendments that went into effect on October 15, 2023 and March 20, 2024. The October amendments clarified which employees were included when determining the amount of leave to be provided and whether leave was paid or unpaid. The March amendments added a private right of action for employees to sue for violations without the necessity of first going through the administrative process.

Firm Secures Approval of the first Long Island Assembly Hall for the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses
Congratulations to Firm Member, Elisabetta T. Coschignano and Associate Meaghan Hassan who were integral to the approval of the first Long Island Assembly Hall for the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. On April 11th, 2024, the Town of Oyster Bay Planning Advisory Board granted the application for a 53,000 square foot Assembly Hall with Parsonage and Maintenance Building to be constructed on the southernmost 10 acres of the industrially zoned site of the former GEICO facility. The entire site was previously utilized by GEICO for its employees and consisted of 1800 parking spaces. “We are happy to bring such a great neighbor to the community who will revitalize and develop a site that has been vacant since 2021 with new and meticulously designed structures and lush greenery to be utilized as a place of worship. We are honored and proud to represent them and look forward to the finished project,” said Elisabetta T. Coschignano. The remaining 10 acres will eventually be marketed for sale by the organization.

Sahn Ward Hosted Baldwin High School for their 2nd Annual Legal Shadow Day
Sahn Ward was honored to host students from Baldwin High School on Thursday, February 29 for their 2nd Annual Legal Shadow Day. Students toured Criminal Court in the morning and met with Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. The students also met with other professionals in the criminal justice system and learned about the varying roles in the judicial system. In the afternoon, students visited the Firm and engaged in speed networking with attorneys and paralegals from our team. It was a wonderful learning experience for all involved.

Firm’s associate, Samuel Bifulco, recently attended St. Joseph's University New York Networking and Mock Interview night as a guest speaker. Tom McKevitt just completed his 25th year as the attorney coach to the Holy Trinity Diocesan High School Mock Trial Team. This is a competition sponsored by the Nassau County Bar Association where high school teams compete against each other over a hypothetical case at the Nassau County Supreme Court in Mineola.
