Sixty Swimmers and Kayakers Take Part in 10th Annual Distant Memories Swim

Approximately 60 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 10th Annual Distant Memories Swim, which took place on August 5. The swim was spearheaded by Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise money for ADRC, Inc. and to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.

The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the bay to Knollwood Beach in Centerport — a distance of 2.5 nautical miles (approximately three miles). The first swimmer in was Bill Van Nostrand of East Setauket with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes. Before taking to the water, each participant gave the names of relatives they were swimming for who suffer with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.
