Popular Brand’s Life Protection Formula Dry Dog Food Pulled from Shelves Due to Possible Mold

VALLEY STREAM, NY — Central Veterinary Associates (CVA) is notifying all local pet owners of the recent voluntary recall from Blue Buffalo Company. The popular pet food brand announced that a limited number of its Life Protection Formula dry dog food was pulled from shelves due to potential mold, which could sicken pets.

The recall includes 30-pound bags of the Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe for dogs. According to the brand, only 2,000 bags are affected with the moisture issue and are being recalled only as a precaution.

The recalled dog food can be identified by UPC Code: 859610000326 and Best By Date: April 11, 2017 AH 2A 12:08 – 14:00, which is printed on the exterior of the packaging.

Toxic mold can affect pets in the same manner in which it affects humans. Like babies and the elderly, smaller or sickly pets might become sick faster.  Symptoms of exposure to mold vary depending on the type and size of pet, but common ones include excessive scratching in the absence of fleas, which can cause sores or bleeding; excessive licking; hair loss; coughing’ sneezing or runny nose; watery eyes; labored breathing or wheezing; loss of appetite; and lethargy.

“Mold poisoning can lead to serious long-term health problems in pets,” says Dr. John Charos, DVM, President/CEO, CVA. “We urge everyone who has purchased this Blue Buffalo product to immediately cease feeding it to their pets and to return it to the store from which it was purchased for a full refund.”

If you suspect that your pet might be affected by the Blue Buffalo mold exposure, CVA keeps its hospital in Valley Stream open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, including all major holidays. For more information about CVA or to make an appointment, call
