Central Veterinary Associates Notifies Dog Owners of Fromm Family Pet Food Recall
Affected Products include Gold pate dog food
VALLEY STREAM, NY — Central Veterinary Associates is calling to its clients’ attention the recent recall from the Fromm Family Pet Food company of its new Gold canned dog food pates. The products are being removed from shelves as they do not contain the recommend levels of vitamins and minerals and may contain elevated levels of vitamin D, which can prove toxic to dogs.
The affected items are:
- Gold Chicken Pate Dog – 12-ounce can, case code #11893, individual can UPC: 72707 11892
- Gold Chicken & Duck – 12-ounce can, case code #11895, individual can UPC: 72705 11894
- Gold Salmon & Chicken Pate – 12-ounce can, case code #11891, individual can UPC: 72705 11890
Vitamin D is essential to regulating a canine’s calcium and phosphorous balance and additionally promotes the retention of calcium, which aids in bone formation and nerve and muscle control. But, when Vitamin D is ingested in high doses, it can cause serious health issues for a pet, especially young dogs and puppies. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity usually develop 12 to 36 hours after ingestion, but can vary in intensity. Signs that your pet may have Vitamin D poisoning include vomiting, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, constipation, excessive drooling, abdominal pain and blood in stool or vomit. Other, more serious conditions include, rapid weight loss, seizures and muscle tremors.
“Poisoning of this nature is most commonly associated with a dog’s ingestion of rodent-killing chemicals or their owner’s dietary supplements,” says Dr. John Charos, DVM, President/CEO, Central Veterinary Associates. “If you have purchased any of the aforementioned Fromm Family Gold products for your pet, immediately remove it from their diet and be sure to keep it out of reach until you return it to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. If your pet experiences symptoms of Vitamin D poisoning, bring them to your local Central Veterinary Associates clinic right away.”
