McPeak’s Residents Find the Ability to Express Themselves Creatively through Poetry
Oct. 9, 2013 - PATCHOGUE, N.Y. -- Who: Jim McPeak, Director, McPeak’s Assisted Living; Linda Ohlsen, Activities Director, McPeak’s Assisted Living; Stacy Santini and Julie Doane Roberts, Moderators, The Poetry Connection; Residents at McPeak’s Assisted Living
What: Stacy Santini and Julie Doane Roberts, Moderators, The Poetry Connection, will teach residents at McPeak’s Assisted Living how to find their voice by creating poetry. Using the power of music, they will help residents put their thoughts and words onto paper to create a poem. They will share their works with the residents and also read compositions from famous poets such as Walt Whitman and Robert Frost.
The Poetry Connection uses poetry combined with the arts to create an educational yet entertaining experience for groups, focusing on the elderly. Each session features poetry combined either with music, visual arts or movement and concludes with the composition of an original work of poetry collectively created by the group.
Ms. Santini came up with the idea for The Poetry Connection after performing a poetry reading for senior citizens at Port Jefferson Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She later met Ms. Roberts, a musician and a poet who has composed songs based on original and previously published poetry. They used their complementary talents to provide a program designed to stimulate the hearts and minds of the residents who thrive on such interaction and inclusion.

Residents live in a comfortable home-like setting in a former mansion first built in 1924 that has been updated to include numerous safety features and modern amenities. Smoke and fire protection systems and a new elevator provide a safe alternative to living alone. Supervision is handled by a trained staff for 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Activities, specialized diets and medication management are also provided.
