SBPLI -- FIRST® LEGO League Championship
[Kings Park, NY] — Eight weeks of research and design will culminate in the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Long Island Championship Tournament, where 40 teams of children and coaches will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship, and sense of community. The Championship Tournament will take place at Longwood High School, located at 100 Longwood Road in Middle Island. The event is being sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Longwood Central School District.
Four hundred middle-school children from Long Island will compete in this year’s Championship Tournament. Four Qualifying Tournaments were held at Central Islip High School on January 24-25 and at Mineola High School on January 31, in which 122 teams competed for an opportunity to advance to the championship tournament.
FIRST®, an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology, brings its biggest-ever annual FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) season to Long Island with the 2014 FLL World Class Challenge.
This year’s FLL World Class Challenge calls for teams of 9- to 14-year-old children to redesign the way how people will gather knowledge and skills in the 21st century. Teams will teach adults how children need and want to learn. In the FLL World Class Challenge, teams will choose a topic that they are passionate about or always wanted to learn; create an innovative solution that improves the learning experience; and share their solution with others.
The FLL competition is judged in four areas: project presentation; robot performance; technical design and programming of the robot; and teamwork, with a consideration of the FLL Core Values. The highest honor will go to the team that best exemplifies the spirit and values of the program. Winners may be eligible to participate in the FLL World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri on April 22-25, the FLL Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 14-17 and the FLL Open at LEGOLAND in California on May 15-17.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, March 8. For more information, visit www.sbpli.org. A list of the participating teams are listed below.
