Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Maximus

Each week, PRMG selects a client for our "Success of the Week." Most weeks, the story is positive, like launching a new website, a grand opening or a media appearance. This week, the story is tragic.

You may have heard about Maximus, a mixed breed dog set on fire in Brentwood, Long Island in 2007. Our client Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue contacted PRMG to help raise money for his medical expenses. We crafted a press release, contacted major media outlets and WCBS TV ran a story about Maximus and his plight. Radio and print also covered the story. Sadly, Maximus died just hours after the story ran.

The next day, we organized a press conference with Save-A-Pet, the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island and the Suffolk County Police. That night, stories ran on WCBS, Fox 5, CW 11 and News 12. While the events are certainly tragic, it is important that they are communicated to the media and the public at large. Hopefully, the media coverage, the public outcry and the reward will lead to the arrest of the callous individual(s) responsible for this heinous act.

Save-A-Pet is a shelter that helps find homes for dogs and cats in Port Jefferson. It is a no-kill shelter and does good work without much fanfare. In the hours after WCBS ran the first story about Maximus, Save-A-Pet's website    saw 2,500 visitors. The next day, the site had over 4,000 visitors. While the people visiting may have been looking for information about Maximus, they were also able to find out about Save-A-Pet's mission and the animals available for adoption. The news coverage helped position Save-A-Pet as a viable resource for issues involving animal rights. As important, Save-A-Pet received positive media attention for doing the type of work they do every day. In the end, Maximus' legacy is one of hope for other animals across Long Island.
