LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Angie Carpenter, Supervisor, Town of Islip, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on November 6. Ms. Carpenter will discuss the latest developments in the town.

Ms. Carpenter brings more than 20 years of government experience and her extensive financial knowledge to her position. In 1993, she was elected Suffolk County Legislator. During her time in the county Legislature, she served on almost every legislative committee, where her leadership generated countywide initiatives in public safety, education, economic development, consumer protection and cultural affairs. In addition, she served as Deputy Presiding Officer for two years.

In 2005, she was elected County Treasurer. In her position, she worked aggressively and increased interest earnings with all designated depositories and recommended changes to the state’s Real Property Tax Law.

In March 2015, Ms. Carpenter was sworn in as Islip’s first woman Town Supervisor in its 300-plus-year history. She replaced Tom Croci, who was elected to the New York State Senate. In November 2015, she was elected to a full four-year term and was re-elected in 2019.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Steve Levy, President, Common Sense Strategies, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on October 23. He will be discussing his latest book, “Solutions to America’s Problems: A Politically Incorrect Conservative’s Take on Maintaining America’s Greatness.”

Mr. Levy has had a career in public service for over 26 years, including three years as New York State Assemblyman. He also served as County Executive of Suffolk County from 2004 to 2011. After leaving government, he formed Common Sense Strategies in order to help government and private businesses use proven techniques to cut their operating costs and enhance efficiencies. He has also written opinion pieces for many media outlets, including Newsday, Fox News, Long Island Business News and Newsmax.

Mr. Levy earned a Bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and his Juris Doctor from St. John’s University of Law.

On October 9, LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) will be hosting a panel discussion on “Labor’s Contribution to a Sound Economy.” Ernie Fazio, Chairman, LIMBA, will be joined by Patrick Guidice, Business Manager, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 1049.

IBEW Local Union 1049 is one of the largest private-sector labor unions on Long Island with approximately 4,200 members. The union’s membership covers all utility work on National Grid US and Long Island Power Authority properties. This includes electric and gas line transmission, distribution construction and maintenance, line clearance, tree trimming, environmental restoration, wood pole restoration, grounds maintenance, power plant valve repair and replacement, electric generation turbine repair, and tele-data.

Mr. Guidice has been a member at IBEW for the past 17 years. He previously served as the organization’s Assistant Business Manager.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Dr. Martin Cantor, Director, Long Island Center for Socioeconomic Policy, will be the guest speaker on Friday, September 25. Dr. Cantor will talk about the viability of Long Island’s economy.

 

Dr. Cantor is a Certified Public Accountant, a consulting economist and economic development consultant to public officials, counties, towns, villages, Industrial Development Agencies and communities.

 

He has served as Suffolk County Economic Development Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Suffolk County IDA from 1988 to 1991. During that time, he helped bring Computer Associates to Suffolk County and created over 23,000 jobs with an estimated annual payroll of $1.4 billion.

 

In addition, Dr. Cantor is Chairman of the Suffolk County Judicial Facilities Agency, which financed the acquisition of the Cohalan State Court Complex, oversaw the construction of the Suffolk County jail in Yaphank and financed the $70 million purchase/leaseback of the H. Lee Dennison Building to Suffolk County.

 

Dr. Cantor provides economic commentary on TV and radio and is a columnist for Long Island Business News. He is also regularly interviewed by The New York Times, Newsday and other publications. He is the author of Long Island, The Global Economy and Race: The Aging of America’s First Suburb. His paper, “Retention of Long Island Millennials at a Community College: Are They College Ready?”, appeared in the international peer-reviewed Journal for Leadership and Instruction.

 

He is an Honorary Member of Delta Mu Delta — The National Honor Society in Business Administration and has been recognized by the National Association of Counties for innovative uses of industrial revenue bonds, international trade promotion initiatives, downtown revitalization policies and minority business incubator initiatives.

 

Dr. Cantor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, a Master of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hofstra University focusing on the socio-economic relationships among education, household income, community and workforce development, and a Doctor of Education degree from Dowling College.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Sol Wachtler, former Chief Justice of the state of New York, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on September 4. (This event is rescheduled from August 7). Mr. Wachter will discuss the topic “Law as It Impacts the Citizen.”

 

Mr. Wachtler served in the Korean War, where he was in charge of the Provost Marshal General Center Military Police Courts and Boards. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he opened his own law practice, where one of his associates was Frank X. Altimari, who later went on to become U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit.

 

He began his political career in 1963 when he was elected Councilman of the Town of Hempstead. Two years later, he was elected Town Supervisor. In 1968, he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court and, in 1972, at the age of 42, became the youngest judge elected to the NYS Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals, both positions he held until 1993.

 

Mr. Wachtler was also the Founder and First Chair of both New York’s State Federal Judicial Council and the National State Federal Judicial Council. He also chaired the Committee on Public Safety for the Nassau County Board of Supervisors.

 

He currently serves as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where he received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Bob Catell, Chairman, Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center at Stony Brook University, will be the guest speaker at its meeting on Friday, July 24. Mr. Catell will talk about the future of energy on Long Island. Specific topics include how energy is delivered and how it is used to power local homes and businesses and the projected need in the future.

Mr. Catell started his career with Brooklyn Union Gas (now KeySpan Corporation and KeySpan Energy Delivery) in 1958. Following National Grid’s acquisition of KeySpan Corporation, he became Chairman of National Grid, U.S. and Deputy Chairman of National Grid plc. He served on the board of numerous nonprofit organizations and business groups and is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, CUNY (City University of New York) Business Leadership Council, National Society of Professional Engineers and the Society of Gas Lighting.

Mr. Catell received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the City College of New York. He has attended Columbia University’s Executive Development Program, and the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. In addition to being Chairman of the AERTC, he is a registered Professional Engineer.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Kevin Dahill, President/Chief Executive Officer, Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State (SHANYS), will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on June 19.

SHANYS is the advocacy arm of the two regional hospital associations that Mr. Dahill oversees: the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council on Long Island and the Northern Hospital Association in the Hudson Valley. These two associations represent nearly 50 hospitals, which serve approximately one-fourth of the state’s population. Mr. Dahill also serves as an Executive Vice President of the Healthcare Association of New York State.

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that it will host a virtual meeting on June 5 with Guest Speaker Phillip Eng, President, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).

Mr. Eng has been LIRR’s President since April 2018. Under his leadership, the LIRR is delivering an historic $6 billion capital program to modernize and expand its infrastructure, including Double Track, Main Line Expansion, East Side Access, capacity improvements to its Jamaica station, the new M9 fleet and centralized train control. He is also responsible for initiating the railroad’s Forward program, a set of strategic initiatives aimed at improving service reliability and enhancing the customer experience.
