LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Angie Carpenter, Supervisor, Town of Islip, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on November 6. Ms. Carpenter will discuss the latest developments in the town.
Ms. Carpenter brings more than 20 years of government experience and her extensive financial knowledge to her position. In 1993, she was elected Suffolk County Legislator. During her time in the county Legislature, she served on almost every legislative committee, where her leadership generated countywide initiatives in public safety, education, economic development, consumer protection and cultural affairs. In addition, she served as Deputy Presiding Officer for two years.
In 2005, she was elected County Treasurer. In her position, she worked aggressively and increased interest earnings with all designated depositories and recommended changes to the state’s Real Property Tax Law.
In March 2015, Ms. Carpenter was sworn in as Islip’s first woman Town Supervisor in its 300-plus-year history. She replaced Tom Croci, who was elected to the New York State Senate. In November 2015, she was elected to a full four-year term and was re-elected in 2019.

PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK — When Tom Schaefer was coaching his children’s lacrosse team, he bought them a softwall rebounder to help them with their ball handling skills. But he noticed that it was not very durable and that, over time, the wall’s surface and elasticity started to deteriorate, and the ball would not rebound as quickly. He also had them practice against a brick wall; while the ball rebounded faster than off a softwall rebounder, it did not return at the correct angle.
Every time a new rebounder broke down, Mr. Schaefer had to make a trip to the sporting goods store, which was time-consuming and expensive. “After buying the third one, I told my wife, ‘I think I’ll build my own rebounder,’” said Mr. Schaefer, who also owns and operates two businesses: Schaefer Boatworks, a custom builder of high-end boats and yachts, and T&M Fabrication, a producer of custom and mass-produced fiberglass tooling and parts for the marine, automotive, construction and entertainment industries. Along with his business partner, Mike Bergamine, T&M also makes complete products and sets of parts for buses, fleet trucks and stage sets for Disney.
In 2017, Mr. Schaefer formed Laxworx, a manufacturer and wholesale retailer of hardwall rebounder products for lacrosse players. Drawing upon his boat building experience with his company and his lacrosse playing days in his youth, he released the Lacrosse Hardwall Rebounder in 2018. Since then, Laxworx has sold several thousand Hardwall Rebounders through its website and several other lacrosse retail outlets.

Dr. Cantor is a Certified Public Accountant, a consulting economist and economic development consultant to public officials, counties, towns, villages, Industrial Development Agencies and communities.
He has served as Suffolk County Economic Development Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Suffolk County IDA from 1988 to 1991. During that time, he helped bring Computer Associates to Suffolk County and created over 23,000 jobs with an estimated annual payroll of $1.4 billion.
In addition, Dr. Cantor is Chairman of the Suffolk County Judicial Facilities Agency, which financed the acquisition of the Cohalan State Court Complex, oversaw the construction of the Suffolk County jail in Yaphank and financed the $70 million purchase/leaseback of the H. Lee Dennison Building to Suffolk County.
Dr. Cantor provides economic commentary on TV and radio and is a columnist for Long Island Business News. He is also regularly interviewed by The New York Times, Newsday and other publications. He is the author of Long Island, The Global Economy and Race: The Aging of America’s First Suburb. His paper, “Retention of Long Island Millennials at a Community College: Are They College Ready?”, appeared in the international peer-reviewed Journal for Leadership and Instruction.
He is an Honorary Member of Delta Mu Delta — The National Honor Society in Business Administration and has been recognized by the National Association of Counties for innovative uses of industrial revenue bonds, international trade promotion initiatives, downtown revitalization policies and minority business incubator initiatives.

Patchogue, NY— McPeak’s Assisted Living has announced that Jennifer Turner, Assistant Administrator/Case Manager, received the 2020 All-Star Staff Award from the Empire State Association of Assisted Living. The award is given to those heroes in the assisted living community who often accomplish the seemingly impossible or are always there when they are needed the most.
Ms. Turner consistently communicated with McPeak’s staff members every step of the way during the COVID-19 pandemic. She alerted the staff of the latest guidelines from the New York State Department of Health and made sure McPeak’s followed the mandated protocols and new procedures in order to safeguard the health of the staff and its residents.
Ms. Turner joined McPeak’s in 2003 as a Receptionist. In 2006, she met the qualifications required by the New York State Health Department to become a Case Manager. A resident of Bay Shore, she earned her Associate’s degree in Business Administration from Briarcliffe College and her Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration from Empire State College.
“I am honored to receive this award,” Ms. Turner said. “It is nice to be recognized for the hard work that has been put in to make sure the McPeak’s continues to make the health and safety of its residents and staff its top priority.”

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted that this year’s Atlantic hurricane season could be the most active on record. The NOAA predicts that this hurricane season will see 19 to 25 named storms, with about half of them becoming hurricanes. Several major hurricanes have already caused mass destruction, including loss of property and life.
In conjunction with National Preparedness Month, James Guercio of Rubin & Rosen Adjusters urges homeowners to review their insurance policies, especially in areas such as Long Island and New York City that are prone to hurricanes and Nor’easters. He advises that they consult with their insurance companies to determine what is covered and what isn’t, before the next natural disaster strikes.
National Preparedness Month promotes family and community disaster planning now and throughout the rest of the year. A disaster preparedness plan includes planning out communications between friends and family, stocking up on necessary supplies and knowing the risk of disasters in the area. Mr. Guercio said homeowners should also make reviewing the coverage in their insurance policies as part of their disaster planning.
“There are three components to each homeowner’s policy: building, personal property and additional living expenses,” Mr. Guercio says. “If one coverage is deficient on a significant claim, it can cause extreme stress on a family trying to recover.”
Mr. Guercio also says homeowners should take a proactive approach when preparing for the next catastrophic event. “Before the next storm hits, have your roof inspected for any loose or missing shingles to prevent water damage,” Mr. Guercio says. “Clean out the gutters and liners and have the trees on your property inspected, pruned, shaped or removed to prevent future damages.”
He also reminded homeowners to see if flooding is covered in their policies. “A flood with surface water is not covered in a homeowner’s policy,” he says. “Flood insurance will cover surface water entering the home, even if the house isn’t in a flood zone. These are things homeowners should not overlook.”

[Patchogue, New York] — McPeak’s Assisted Living is urging families to make this Grandparents Day special by visiting their loved ones living in assisted living facilities. The recent state Health Department rules are now allowing visitation at assisted living facilities once again, meaning residents will be able to see their families.
Grandparents Day, which takes place on September 13, honors the families’ elders and celebrates the familial bonds between the young and old. The holiday’s beginnings can be traced back to 1956 — the same year that McPeak’s was founded. Marian McQuade, a West Virginia resident, was helping put together a celebration for seniors over the age of 80 when she noticed that the local nursing home residents were alone and had no one to visit them. From there, she sought to establish a holiday for all grandparents and those seniors who may have been forgotten by their families.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic saw assisted living facilities prohibiting families from visiting their loved ones. Many residents experienced loneliness, isolation and depression as a result. But on July 15, 2020, the New York State Health Department allowed visitors inside and outside the facility, but with strict guidelines. Among them, facilities cannot have any new coronavirus cases within a 28-day period and must complete and pass inspections of their infection control practices. Meanwhile, visitors must provide their contact information upon checking in, undergo a temperature check, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Residents will be allowed no more than two visitors at a time, and at least one of the visitors must be 18 years of age or older.
“We urge everyone to spend time with their grandparents on this special day, but stay safe while doing so,” says James McPeak, Owner, McPeak’s Assisted Living. “Grandparents Day has more of a special meaning this year.”

LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Sol Wachtler, former Chief Justice of the state of New York, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on September 4. (This event is rescheduled from August 7). Mr. Wachter will discuss the topic “Law as It Impacts the Citizen.”
Mr. Wachtler served in the Korean War, where he was in charge of the Provost Marshal General Center Military Police Courts and Boards. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he opened his own law practice, where one of his associates was Frank X. Altimari, who later went on to become U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit.
He began his political career in 1963 when he was elected Councilman of the Town of Hempstead. Two years later, he was elected Town Supervisor. In 1968, he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court and, in 1972, at the age of 42, became the youngest judge elected to the NYS Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals, both positions he held until 1993.
Mr. Wachtler was also the Founder and First Chair of both New York’s State Federal Judicial Council and the National State Federal Judicial Council. He also chaired the Committee on Public Safety for the Nassau County Board of Supervisors.
He currently serves as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where he received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.
