Lightning Warriors to Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

MOUNT SINAI, NEW YORK – Lightning Warriors, a not-for-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.

This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and post-race refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more self-esteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids triathlon on Long Island with 135 participants in 2022, and an expected attendance of 200 racers this year. To register for Mini Maniac, visit www.runsignup.com/minimaniac. Registration ends on September 15, 2023 at 1:30 PM EDT.

Mini Maniacs is also seeking volunteers for this event. Anyone who is interested may sign up at www.runsignup.com/Race/Volunteer/NY/MountSinai/MiniManicYouthTriathlon.

Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth Shares the Latest Updates from the Town at LIMBA

On June 23, Ed Smyth, Supervisor, Town of Huntington, will provide the latest updates from Huntington at LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action). This event will take place at the Candlelight Diner, 56 Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Mr. Smyth was elected Huntington Town Supervisor in 2021 after serving as Town Councilman for four years. He voted to dedicate the Town’s $22 million in funding from the American Rescue Act to the Huntington Station Hub Sewer Project, which will help encourage long-overdue economic investment and job creation in downtown Huntington Station.

“This year, the Town of Huntington has been laser focused on revitalization and communication,” Mr. Smyth said. “This administration is working tirelessly with the Huntington community to make it the best it can be. From the Melville listening sessions to redevelop the Route 110 corridor into a mixed-use hub, to the Huntington Station DRI initiative to revitalize our hamlet, Huntington has been on the move.”

As Councilman, Mr. Smyth successfully proposed measures to prevent overdevelopment, preserve open space, reduce noise pollution and make the Cold War Veterans Tax Exemption permanent. His most important vote was to settle the decades-long LIPA lawsuit that would have otherwise bankrupted the Town.

To help improve water quality, the Town has implemented a Floating Upweller System (FLUPSY), launched a pilot program for the growth and harvesting of sugar kelp and is working with the local water districts to combat 1,4 dioxane.

He also voted to establish ethics reforms and fund critical infrastructure improvements. He has continued to keep taxpayers first by ensuring that local Town government is working efficiently, transparently and at a minimum cost to its residents and keeping spending under the tax cap, which helps the Town maintain its AAA bond rating.

“Huntington has much to be proud of,” Mr. Smyth said. “By working together and actively creating ways to communicate with residents, the future is bright. We are well on our way to wrapping up 2023 with milestone initiatives for other municipalities to model.”

In addition, Mr. Smyth is a small business owner who has a law practice  in Huntington Village. He was President of the Huntington Lawyers Club and a member of the Lloyd Harbor ZBA. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a (res.) Staff Sergeant.

“Having lived in Huntington under Republican and Democratic leadership, the town has been served well,” Ernie Fazio, Chairman, LIMBA, said. “Mr. Smyth appears to have the temperament and the intelligence to run the town successfully.”

Marlena’s Yacht Club Opens Up Just in Time
for Its First Summer Season

MONTAUK, NEW YORK — Now that the summer season is approaching, fishermen are getting ready to bring out their rods and reels, and boaters are ready to hit the water. For those looking for a new place on the East End, they can check out the newest establishment in Montauk.

Located in Montauk Harbor, Marlena’s Yacht Club is eastern Long Island’s premier fishing and tourist destination for boaters, fishermen and vacationers. The marina features many amenities, including floating docks, spacious bathrooms and showers, a ship’s store and tackle shop, fueling stations, a fish cleaning station, charter fishing boats, winter storage at Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club & Marina, and a full-service bar. With cottages on site for rent, Marlena’s is ideal for boaters looking for additional amenities.

Marlena’s ship’s store and tackle shop serves fishermen, boat enthusiasts, and professional captains and crews. The store is equipped with fishing tackle, boat supplies, bait, clothing and apparel. In addition, its staff is dedicated to assisting their customers with all their boating needs.

After a day of fishing, anglers can stop in for a drink at Marlena’s Pack Out, formerly Liars Saloon. The bar, which is leased out to and operated by Hali Devlin and Phil Baigent, offers a variety of beers and mixed drinks.

In 2022, Sam Gershowitz, Owner of Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club & Marina, purchased the former Liars Saloon property after it closed in 2021. Liars was a popular dive bar that opened in 1978 and was best known for its $1 draft beers, famous mudslides, and karaoke nights. Its diverse clientele consisted of fishermen, surfers and out-of-towners.

Mr. Gershowitz and his team renovated the property and turned it into an extraordinary East End boating destination in honor of his late wife, Marlena, who passed away in September.

“I already own a marina with Sam’s Star Island and I always wanted to own another one,” said Mr. Gershowitz, an avid fisherman. “That is when I saw the Liars property, and I decided to buy it. Marlena’s is the ideal destination for fishermen and boaters. I also wanted to create a high-quality establishment that would be a fitting honor for my late wife, Marlena, who was the biggest catch of my life.”

Marlena’s Yacht Club is located at 408 West Lake Drive in Montauk. For more information, call (631) 406-4926 or visit www.marlenasyc.com.
