Dr. Aaron Vine Advises Pet Owners How to Keep Their Animals Safe during a Tornado

NEW YORK, NY – Dr. Aaron Vine, a veterinarian and the author of How to Save Your Pet, Yourself, and Your Wallet From Pain and Suffering, provides advice on how to safeguard your pet when natural disasters such as tornadoes occur.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, tornadoes are making their way through the Midwest, from Texas to Nebraska. There is currently a tornado watch in parts of Kansas and Nebraska, with some intense tornadoes possibly making their way. Large hail is expected, as well as very large hail — 2.5 inches in diameter. In addition, there will probably be damaging wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour.

In the event a tornado hits, Dr. Vine advises the following:

        • Put together a “go bag” with 3-5 days of pet food and water, pet medications and medical records. Also bring bowls, paper towels and a manual can opener.
        • Be sure your pet has identification on themselves or is microchipped.
        • Find your pet and get them to a safe place during a tornado watch.
        • Place your pet in a crate that has their information on there. It makes for a safe hiding spot.
        • Do not keep pets near power lines that can be knocked down during a tornado.

“Tornadoes run an unpredictable path and can create an immeasurable amount of damage,” Dr. Vine says. “Please get your pet to a safe place during the tornado watch.  Once it becomes a tornado warning there may not be enough time for you to search and get back to safety.”
