Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer Discusses Town’s Latest Developments at LIMBA

Rich Schaffer (third from right), Supervisor, Town of Babylon, was the guest speaker at the LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) meeting at the Courtyard by Marriott in Ronkonkoma on October 11. Also pictured (left to right): Frederick Johs, Partner, Lewis Johs Avallone Aviles, LLP; John Tsunis, Chief Executive Officer, Gold Coast Bank; Bill Miller, Treasurer; Ernie Fazio, Chairman; and Ken Nevor, Member, LIMBA; and Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling. On October 11, Rich Schaffer, Supervisor, Town of Babylon, was the guest speaker at the LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) meeting to discuss the latest developments in the town. The meeting was held at Courtyard by Marriott in Ronkonkoma.

Mr. Schaffer said that, seven years after Superstorm Sandy hit Long Island, the town is still working on infrastructural improvements. This includes fixing the bridges in the American Venice community and implementing drainage improvement and road elevation projects to avoid future flooding.

The town is in a resurgence, according to Mr. Schaffer, with new development projects taking off, thanks to help with other entities and municipalities. For example, he worked with the town’s Industrial Development Agency and the Village of Lindenhurst to bring in a 260-unit apartment building on the corner of Wellwood and Hoffman Avenues. In addition, another project is in the works on Wellwood Avenue to convert shuttered buildings into restaurants, breweries and stores along the corridor.

In addition, the town’s Planning Department is overseeing a proposed hotel near the Babylon train station, and Mr. Schaffer is working with the Planning Department and a working group on the five-phase Greybarn development project, which is halfway complete. The IDA purchased a piece of property next to Greybarn which will be converted into a business workspace, which will give local residents the opportunity to work remotely. There is also a plan to build underground parking near the MLK Health Center at Straight Path

These projects are a victory against the NIMBYism that runs through the town, Mr. Schaffer said. “We ask them, ‘What do you want us to do? You complain about the empty buildings and storefronts. You have to give me some ideas.’”

The three villages in Babylon — Amityville, Babylon and Lindenhurst — are in a shared services agreement with the town, according to Mr. Shaffer. The town makes its services available to these villages, which, in turn, pay for these services.

On the topic of energy, Mr. Schaffer said the town has switch from incandescent to LED-based lighting at its facilities. As a result, the town’s electricity bills have dropped dramatically. When discussing the Williams pipeline, he said he supports it and that he has sent letters to the Long Island state senators urging them to fight the governor’s plan to shut down the pipeline. While he understands the concerns posed by the environmentalists, Mr. Schaffer said, “You can’t stop progress.”

Mr. Schaffer also announced that the town received a bond rating of AAA — the highest possible bond rating a municipality can receive. This was accomplished, he said, by holding the line on property taxes and setting up a surplus in the budget.

Prior to becoming Town Supervisor, Mr. Schaffer was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 1988, 1989 and 1991. In 2011, the position for supervisor became vacant when Steve Bellone was elected Suffolk County Executive. Mr. Schaffer was appointed to the post by the Town Board. He is currently Babylon’s longest-serving supervisor.

(SBPLI).

The 2020 FIRST Robotics Competition season will begin with the kickoff, which will take place on January 4, 2020 at LIU Post Tilles Center.

This year’s event featured 17 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2019 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition that was held in March. The challenge was dubbed DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE(SM) Presented by The Boeing Company, in which two three-team alliances had two minutes and 15 seconds to prepare the rockets and cargo ship with hatch panels, load as many cargo pods as possible and return the robot to its Habitat.

Two Brothers Scrap Metal Collects Nearly 9,000 Pounds of Unused and Unwanted Electronics at Mineola Middle School’s eWaste Drive

Largest Amount of Electronics Dropped off at Event Since Recycling Company’s Involvement Began in 2016

Two Brothers Scrap Metal donated the use of a container for Mineola Middle School’s eWaste Drive, which was held on October 25. The drive brought in 8,840 pounds of electronic waste — the largest amount collected by Two Brothers since the company became involved in this event back in 2016. Residents came to the school to drop off their unwanted and unused computers, hard drives, printers, flatscreen TVs, chargers and other items.

The purpose of the drive, now in its fifth year, was to help the environment by disposing of electronics that are either no longer being used or do not work anymore; recycling electronic waste keeps it from winding up in landfills.

The event began as a project initiated by the school’s Robotics Club. Three years ago, the Robotics Club teamed up with the school’s Environmental Club to promote the Drive to the local community.

Two Brothers has participated in the eWaste Drive for the past four years. During that time, Two Brothers has hauled away 30,880 pounds — more than fifteen tons — of electronic waste. Last year, 8,140 pounds of unused electronics were hauled away. The staff at Mineola Middle School thanked Two Brothers for its support.

Kennedy Picks up Major Endorsement from Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York & Long Island

Latest Labor Union to Support Republican Candidate

The Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York & Long Island has announced they have chosen to back John M. Kennedy as the next Suffolk County Executive. After submitting his responses for the candidate questionnaire, which were carefully reviewed, Mr. Kennedy picked up the union’s support. The leadership cited his stance in support of union workers and the importance of keeping high-paying jobs in Suffolk in announcing their endorsement.

The council is comprised of approximately 15,000 members, including construction workers, asbestos and hazardous materials handlers, Catholic high school teachers, recycling and waste handlers. The following unions are part of the council: General Building Laborers Local 66; Construction & General Building Laborers Local 79; Greater NY Lecet (Greater New York Laborers-Employers Cooperation & Education Trust); Asbestos, Lead & Hazardous Waste Laborers Local 78; Waste Material, Recycling & General Industrial Laborers Local 108; Lay Faculty Association Local 1261; and Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA).

The announcement comes after Mr. Kennedy received endorsements from the Utility Workers Union of America Local 393, Nassau Suffolk Building Trades Council, United Association of Plumbers Local 200, and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local One.

“After a review of your positions related to working men and women on Long Island, and your history of standing up for Long Island’s working families, we are proud to make this endorsement on behalf of the 5,000-plus members of LiUNA living here on the island,” said Josh Slaughter, Long Island Political Coordinator, Mason Tenders District Council Political Action Committee. “We appreciate your efforts to support local union labor while working to prevent out-of-state workers from degrading our wages and jeopardizing workplace safety.”

“I am very honored and humbled to receive this endorsement,” Mr. Kennedy said. “We need to put our middle class back to work. That means keeping jobs in Suffolk and filling those positions with Suffolk residents. There is no reason to bring in a contractor from out of state when we have people right here who are willing to work and need high-paying wages to support themselves and their families.”
