Marlena’s Yacht Club Opens Up Just in Time
for Its First Summer Season

MONTAUK, NEW YORK — Now that the summer season is approaching, fishermen are getting ready to bring out their rods and reels, and boaters are ready to hit the water. For those looking for a new place on the East End, they can check out the newest establishment in Montauk.

Located in Montauk Harbor, Marlena’s Yacht Club is eastern Long Island’s premier fishing and tourist destination for boaters, fishermen and vacationers. The marina features many amenities, including floating docks, spacious bathrooms and showers, a ship’s store and tackle shop, fueling stations, a fish cleaning station, charter fishing boats, winter storage at Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club & Marina, and a full-service bar. With cottages on site for rent, Marlena’s is ideal for boaters looking for additional amenities.

Marlena’s ship’s store and tackle shop serves fishermen, boat enthusiasts, and professional captains and crews. The store is equipped with fishing tackle, boat supplies, bait, clothing and apparel. In addition, its staff is dedicated to assisting their customers with all their boating needs.

After a day of fishing, anglers can stop in for a drink at Marlena’s Pack Out, formerly Liars Saloon. The bar, which is leased out to and operated by Hali Devlin and Phil Baigent, offers a variety of beers and mixed drinks.

In 2022, Sam Gershowitz, Owner of Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club & Marina, purchased the former Liars Saloon property after it closed in 2021. Liars was a popular dive bar that opened in 1978 and was best known for its $1 draft beers, famous mudslides, and karaoke nights. Its diverse clientele consisted of fishermen, surfers and out-of-towners.

Mr. Gershowitz and his team renovated the property and turned it into an extraordinary East End boating destination in honor of his late wife, Marlena, who passed away in September.

“I already own a marina with Sam’s Star Island and I always wanted to own another one,” said Mr. Gershowitz, an avid fisherman. “That is when I saw the Liars property, and I decided to buy it. Marlena’s is the ideal destination for fishermen and boaters. I also wanted to create a high-quality establishment that would be a fitting honor for my late wife, Marlena, who was the biggest catch of my life.”

Marlena’s Yacht Club is located at 408 West Lake Drive in Montauk. For more information, call (631) 406-4926 or visit www.marlenasyc.com.

Gershow Recycling Donates the Use of 30 Cars for the 16th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament

Fire Departments Use Electric Tools to Cut up the Vehicles

In support of local fire departments, Gershow Recycling donated the use of 30 cars for the 16th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, which was held at the Northport Fire Department’s Training Grounds at Steer’s Pit in Northport on May 13. Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the tournament.

Twenty-seven teams from fifteen fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a “crash” using the Jaws of Life. Once again, the firefighters used battery-powered tools during the extrication exercises; the Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament was the first such tournament to bring in electric tools.

Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed. The top three teams were:

  • 1st Place — East Northport FD (6 minutes, 26 seconds)
  • 2nd Place — Northport FD (6 minutes, 50 seconds)
  • 3rd Place — Commack FD (8 minutes, 40 seconds)

The Ridge Fire Department had the fastest evolution time of the tournament at 3 minutes, 6 seconds.

After the tournament, the vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled.

Gershow has nine locations in Brooklyn, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Bay Shore, Medford and Riverhead. For more information, call (631) 289-6188 or visit www.gershow.com.

Huntington Republican Committee Will Accept Retired American Flags from May 15 to July 1

The Huntington Republican Committee is inviting town residents to bring their retired American flags to the Huntington GOP office, located at 690 New York Avenue in Huntington. Flags will be collected from May 15 to July 1.

Flags that have been worn-out, frayed, torn or soiled can be placed in a dropoff bin at the Huntington GOP office, where it will be properly retired. According to the U.S. Flag Code, when the flag is “in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display,” it is recommended that the flag be “destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

With Memorial Day, Flag Day and July 4th approaching, many are proudly displaying their flags and, in many cases, replacing their old flags. It’s an ideal time of the year to collect and properly retire any worn flags.

“We encourage residents to drop off their American flags that can no longer be considered fit for display,” said Tom McNally, Chairman, Huntington Republican Committee. “We will personally see to it that these flags will be retired in a proper and respectful manner.”

Justin E. Driscoll Discusses the Workings and Goals of the New York Power Authority at LIMBA

On Friday, May 12, New York Power Authority (NYPA) Acting President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll will talk about the Power Authority’s priorities, operations and its future goals at LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action). This event will take place at the Candlelight Diner, 56 Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Some of the topics to be discussed will include NYPA’s role in building a clean and robust electric grid of the future in New York, including upgrading much-needed transmission across the state, the Power Authority’s priorities in advancing the Governor’s clean energy targets, and the importance of building infrastructure that can support the electrification of transportation.

As the Acting President and CEO of the nation’s largest state-owned electric utility, Mr. Driscoll is responsible for developing and implementing the Power Authority’s strategic vision and mission, and for overseeing its operations, legal and financial matters, and relationships with external stakeholders. In addition, Mr. Driscoll oversees the operations of the New York State Canal System.

Mr. Driscoll supervises NYPA’s 16 generation facilities and more than 1,400 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission, as well as its role as an energy efficiency project developer and energy supplier for its governmental customers, including New York City, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the New York City Housing Authority, state agencies and local governments.

Through Mr. Driscoll’s leadership, NYPA is helping the Hochul administration meet its nation-leading clean energy goals. To fully access New York’s growing renewable energy resources, he is guiding the most dramatic transformation of the state’s grid in more than 40 years by implementing large-scale transmission projects, such as Smart Path, Smart Path Connect, Clean Path New York and Central East Energy Connect. He is also overseeing NYPA’s priority to decarbonize its natural gas plants and 15 of the highest emitting state facilities.

Under Mr. Driscoll’s leadership, NYPA also launched ConnectALL, the largest-ever investment in New York’s digital infrastructure. Announced by the Governor in her State of the State address last year, NYPA leveraged existing transmission infrastructure to bring broadband internet to unserved and underserved communities.

Before joining the Power Authority, Mr. Driscoll served as an attorney representing Fortune 500 companies, governmental entities, and energy companies, in complex commercial litigation and regulatory matters.

He currently serves on several boards, including the Alliance to Save Energy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the GridWise Alliance, EPRI, New York City’s Urban Green Council and the World Resources Institute’s Global Energy Advisory.

Mr. Driscoll earned a bachelor’s degree from American University’s School of Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. and his law degree from New York Law School. He also attended New York University School of Law’s L.L.M. program in trade regulation.
